Looking at life from both sides now
I watched Joni Mitchell’s 2023, utterly moving, appearance at the Newport Folk Festival and suddenly understood what she meant about looking at life from both sides. She wrote the song at 23!
Joni Mitchell gave a surprise performance just months after picking up a guitar again after being struck down by an aneurism. Hearing Both Sides Now in her voice gone gravelly with years, I suddenly realised I was at a stage of my life where those words carry so much meaning, acutely aware of how ephemeral life is as I watch my grandson grow and transform over a short year and wonder if I will see him into adulthood.
This comic came out of a session on frames at Jane Porter’s comics class, which made me think of my grandson exploding and uncontainable by frames.
Such a lovely comic! I've been listening to Joni Mitchell lately, too, and often myself choking on 'The Circle Game' because it reminds me of my kids and how they they must be somehow baffled at how fast they're changing, which then of course reminds me of myself when I was their age.
Another fabulous comic. I've got FOMO with Jane's class! And fire under my pants with all the things I want to do now time is rushing past!
